NIPT is a safe blood test performed from week 10 of pregnancy that screens fetal DNA for chromosomal abnormalities — including Down Syndrome — with no risk to the pregnancy. Results are delivered within 14 days.
NIPT — Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing

What is NIPT?

Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is a chromosomal screening test that analyzes fetal DNA from a simple maternal blood sample. It detects chromosomal abnormalities without any risk to the pregnancy. NIPT is suitable for single and multiple pregnancies, natural and assisted reproduction, and women of any age, ethnicity, or body mass index. Testing is available from week 10 of pregnancy.

What does NIPT screen for?

  • Trisomy 21 — Down Syndrome
  • Trisomy 18 — Edwards Syndrome
  • Trisomy 13 — Patau Syndrome
  • Sexual chromosome abnormalities (45,X | 47,XXY | 47,XYY | 47,XXX)
  • Fetal sex determination

Who is NIPT recommended for?

Women over the age of 35

  • Women who received abnormal screening results in their first trimester
  • Women who previously had a pregnancy with Down Syndrome
  • Women with suspicious findings on ultrasound
  • Any woman who wants reassurance about chromosomal health

What happens if abnormalities are detected?

If any chromosomal abnormalities are found, your doctor will recommend additional confirmatory testing — either amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). NIPT is a screening test, not a diagnostic test.

Delivery of results: 14 days.
