Congratulations on your pregnancy
Pregnancy lasts approximately 40 weeks, counted from the first day of your last menstrual period. Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each bringing significant changes for both mother and baby.
First trimester (weeks 1–13)
Folic acid supplementation is critically important as the neural tube closes during week 6. Common first trimester symptoms include nausea, fatigue, breast tenderness, and frequent urination. Avoid alcohol, smoking, raw fish, unpasteurized cheese, high-mercury fish, X-rays, extreme heat, and vigorous contact sports. Do not take any medication without consulting your doctor.
Second trimester (weeks 14–27)
The second trimester is often the most comfortable period of pregnancy. The anatomy scan is typically performed between weeks 18–22 to check for structural abnormalities. Glucose screening for gestational diabetes is done between weeks 24–28. Laser hair removal is safe during this trimester. Travel and driving remain safe — listen to your body.
Third trimester (weeks 28–40)
The baby gains most of its weight during this period and moves into position for delivery. Monitor fetal movement closely — contact your doctor if you notice any decrease in your baby's usual movement patterns.
Postpartum
Your first postpartum checkup is scheduled one week after delivery. Postpartum depression (PPD) affects 1 in 10 mothers. If you experience prolonged mood changes, difficulty bonding, or anxiety lasting more than 2–3 weeks after delivery, speak with your doctor — support is available.
