What is circumcision?
Circumcision is a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin from the male penis. At AlHayat Medical Center it is performed using several methods — your doctor will advise the most appropriate technique. The procedure takes 20–30 minutes. The baby should not be fed for at least 2 hours before the procedure.
When should circumcision be delayed?
- If the penis is noticeably small
- If the baby was born prematurely or below normal weight
- If the baby has jaundice
- If there is a hereditary bleeding disorder
- If structural abnormalities are present in the penis or urinary tract
Post-operative care
- Begin feeding the baby immediately after the procedure
- Wash the circumcision area at least twice daily using warm antiseptic water
- Check that the baby is urinating normally
- If a plastic ring was used, it will separate naturally after 5–7 days — do not remove it
- Contact your doctor if there is heavy bleeding or if the ring has not separated after 7 days
What is normal after the procedure
Redness and swelling of the skin around the area
- Small yellowish or white spots under the head of the penis
- A small amount of blood under the bandage
