Overview
Tooth sensitivity (dentinal hypersensitivity) affects up to 1 in 3 adults and is among the most common dental complaints. It causes sharp, sudden pain when teeth are exposed to cold, heat, sweet foods, or air. The pain occurs when dentine — the layer beneath enamel — becomes exposed, allowing stimuli to reach the nerve. It ranges from mild discomfort to severe pain disrupting eating and daily life.
Symptoms
- Sharp sudden pain from cold drinks, ice cream, hot beverages, or sweet foods
- Pain from cold air — common in Kuwait's air-conditioned environments
- Discomfort when brushing or flossing near the gum line
- Pain lasting seconds rather than lingering (distinguishes sensitivity from pulpitis)
Causes & Risk Factors
- Enamel erosion from acidic foods and carbonated drinks
- Gum recession exposing root dentine
- Brushing too hard or with a hard-bristled toothbrush
- Tooth grinding (bruxism) wearing down enamel
- Cracked teeth or leaking fillings; gum disease
Complications
- Avoidance of certain foods impacting nutrition
- Untreated erosion or gum recession worsening over time
- If caused by crack or decay: may progress to pulpitis or abscess
Diagnosis
Dentist examines teeth, assesses gum levels, and may take X-rays to identify the cause. It is important to distinguish sensitivity from toothache caused by decay or a cracked tooth, as these require different treatment.
Treatment
- Desensitising toothpaste: blocks tubules to reduce pain over time
- Fluoride varnish applied in clinic: strengthens enamel
- Dental bonding or composite resin: seals exposed root surfaces
- Gum grafting if significant gum recession is the cause
- Address underlying cause: treat decay, replace worn fillings, manage bruxism
Prevention
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently in circular motions
- Use fluoride sensitive toothpaste daily
- Limit acidic foods and drinks; rinse with water afterwards
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
- Regular dental check-ups to catch erosion and recession early
