Overview
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition causing persistent facial redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes acne-like bumps on the cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead. It cannot be cured but is very manageable. In Kuwait, sun exposure, heat, and spicy foods are particularly common triggers.
Symptoms
- Facial redness (flushing) across nose and cheeks; visible blood vessels (telangiectasia)
- Swollen red bumps resembling acne; burning or stinging sensation
- Ocular rosacea: irritated red swollen eyelids
- Rhinophyma: bulbous nose enlargement in some men — permanent if untreated
Causes & Risk Factors
- Facial blood vessel abnormalities; Demodex mites; Helicobacter pylori infection
- Genetic predisposition and immune overreaction
- Kuwait triggers: UV exposure, hot humid weather, spicy foods, hot beverages, stress
Complications
- Rhinophyma (permanent nose enlargement); corneal damage from ocular rosacea
- Significant psychological impact: embarrassment and social withdrawal
Diagnosis
Clinical diagnosis — no specific test. Dermatologist rules out acne, lupus, perioral dermatitis. Biopsy occasionally taken.
Treatment
- Topical: metronidazole, azelaic acid, ivermectin cream (first-line for papulopustular type), brimonidine gel for redness
- Oral: low-dose doxycycline; isotretinoin for severe cases
- Laser/IPL: highly effective for visible blood vessels and redness
- Daily SPF 50+ sunscreen — non-negotiable in Kuwait
Prevention
- Apply SPF 50+ daily — the single most important step
- Identify and avoid personal food and lifestyle triggers
- Use fragrance-free alcohol-free skincare; seek shade in Kuwait's summer
