Overview
IUI places a carefully prepared sperm sample directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation, increasing the number of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes and improving fertilisation chances. It is less invasive, less expensive, and less complex than IVF — and for the right candidates, an effective first step.
When Is IUI Recommended?
- Unexplained infertility
- Mild to moderate male factor infertility
- Cervical factor — hostile mucus or scarring
- Ovulatory dysfunction (e.g., mild PCOS) with stimulation
- Sexual dysfunction preventing normal intercourse
- Use of frozen sperm
IUI is not recommended for blocked tubes, severe male factor, diminished ovarian reserve, or moderate-to-severe endometriosis — IVF is more appropriate.
The IUI Process
- Cycle monitoring by transvaginal ultrasound
- Ovulation trigger injection when lead follicle reaches 18–20mm
- Semen preparation — sperm washing and concentration
- Insemination — thin catheter through the cervix; quick, generally painless
- Pregnancy test 14–16 days later
Success Rates
- 10–20% pregnancy rate per cycle depending on age and diagnosis
- ~30–40% cumulative over 3–4 cycles
- If unsuccessful after 3–4 cycles, IVF is the next step
