IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation)
IVF is the most widely used and effective assisted reproductive technology, helping millions of couples worldwide conceive. It involves fertilising an egg outside the body and transferring the resulting embryo to the uterus. Learn about the IVF process, success rates, and what to expect at AlHayat Medical Center.

Overview

IVF is the most widely performed form of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART). Since 1978, more than 10 million children have been born through IVF. It is suitable for a wide range of infertility causes, making it the cornerstone of modern fertility treatment.

Who May Need IVF?

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Moderate-to-severe male factor infertility (usually with ICSI)
  • Endometriosis affecting fertility
  • Ovulatory disorders not responding to other treatments
  • Diminished ovarian reserve
  • Unexplained infertility after failed treatment
  • Genetic conditions requiring PGT before transfer
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss

The IVF Process

  1. Baseline investigations — hormones, ultrasound, semen analysis
  2. Ovarian stimulation — 10–14 days of daily hormone injections; monitored by ultrasound and blood tests
  3. Trigger injection — when follicles reach ~18–20mm
  4. Egg retrieval — under sedation; transvaginal needle aspiration; 15–30 minutes; home same day
  5. Fertilisation — conventional insemination or ICSI
  6. Embryo culture — 5–6 days to blastocyst stage
  7. Embryo transfer — single embryo placed via thin catheter; no anaesthesia
  8. Luteal support — progesterone supplements
  9. Pregnancy test — 10–14 days post-transfer

Success Rates (approximate live birth rates per cycle)

  • Under 35: 40–50%
  • 35–37: 30–40%
  • 38–40: 20–30%
  • Over 40: 10–20% with own eggs
