Gingivitis
Gingivitis causes red, swollen, bleeding gums. Learn what causes gum inflammation and how to reverse it before it becomes serious gum disease in Kuwait.

Overview

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial plaque build-up at the gum line. Extremely common, it affects the majority of adults at some point. The critical fact: gingivitis is fully reversible with professional cleaning and improved oral hygiene. Left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis — irreversible bone loss that is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in Kuwait.

Symptoms

  • Red or purplish gums (healthy gums are firm and pink)
  • Gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing — the most common sign
  • Swollen, puffy, tender gums; persistent bad breath
  • Importantly: gingivitis is usually painless, which is why it is often ignored

Causes & Risk Factors

  • Plaque build-up from inadequate brushing and flossing
  • Calculus (tartar) that cannot be removed by brushing alone
  • Tobacco and shisha use — significantly worsens gum inflammation
  • Diabetes: impairs healing and immune response in the gums
  • Hormonal changes: pregnancy gingivitis, puberty, menstruation
  • Certain medications causing gum overgrowth (calcium channel blockers, phenytoin)

Complications

  • Progression to periodontitis: irreversible bone and ligament destruction
  • Tooth loss — periodontitis is the leading cause of adult tooth loss in Kuwait
  • Research links gum disease to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and preterm birth

Diagnosis

Clinical examination measures pocket depths, checks for bleeding on probing, and assesses plaque and calculus levels. X-rays check for bone loss — if present, the diagnosis upgrades to periodontitis.

Treatment

  • Professional scaling and polishing removes plaque and calculus
  • Oral hygiene instruction: correct brushing and interdental cleaning technique
  • Chlorhexidine mouthwash as short-term adjunct
  • Treatment of contributing systemic conditions
  • Gingivitis is fully reversible with treatment and good home care

Prevention

  • Brush twice daily for 2 minutes; clean between teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes
  • Professional cleaning every 6 months (3-4 months if high risk)
  • Quit smoking and shisha; control diabetes
  • Do not ignore bleeding gums — they are a warning sign, not normal
